Sailing

The tidal bay surrounding Elie Harbour provides a superb location for sailing all types of craft, and is an ideal base from which to learn to sail, or expand your skills. Whether pottering around in a dinghy or day boat, or heading off in a Keelboat on a cruise along the River Forth, Elie is an ideal location. Wildlife such as puffins, seals, porpoise and dolphins are regular companions on outings in the summer.

In the early 1960’s sailing at Elie & Earlsferry Sailing Club was mainly in dinghies. There were many Fireballs, GP 14s and other types racing around the bay. Over the years, the growth has been in Keelboats, and we now have a wide variety of craft moored in the harbour, ranging from 17ft Leisures to 27ft Hunters. We have an adjacent dinghy park where Members can store smaller craft, and launch directly onto the long sandy beach.  Along with our colleagues moored in St. Monance harbour, our members regular take part in club racing and casual cruising.

The sailing season is from mid-April to October, and races are often held around marks in the bay, and to further points such as the Bass Rock and North Berwick. Members take a great deal of pleasure from competing and improving their sailing techniques, as well as the banter in the Clubhouse after the events.

Cruising to ports around the Forth is a pleasurable pastime for members with visits to Aberdour, The Edinburgh Festival (Granton), North Berwick and The Isle of May often planned into the sailing calendar.

New Members will find an enthusiastic willingness from older members to pass on and share knowledge and experience, whether it be about how to rig up their new boat, fix some obscure piece of kit, or more generally how to improve their sailing. The Club owns a Laser Stratos & a Laser Pico, free for the use of Club members.  The Club has participated in the RYA “Push The Boat Out” initiative to encourage all members of the public to try out sailing, and we will again be offering taster sessions throughout the summer in 2018.

The Club can also run informal sessions on alternate Wednesday evenings (tide and weather permitting) throughout the Summer season for dinghy, keelboat and powerboat tuition, where members, potential members and visitors will be made most welcome. You don’t need a boat to sail with us!
